Lock-down coping mechanisms - Tea

This has been the oddest and most stressful 12 months I've ever experienced. There has been loss, stress, anxiety, furlough, cancer scares and a complete change of daily routines. The people I love have experienced loss of income, loss of a parent, months with no access to their own child, months with no break from their children, struggles with mental health, struggles with working from home, redundancy, actual cancer and major operations. It has also been full of love and adjustments and finding ways to appreciate the important things in life.... mainly meaning the people I value. I've been finding ways to do that and as odd as it may sound, drinking tea has turned out to be a rather valuable coping mechanism.

I’ve been saying for years that I don’t like tea. As it turns out what I really don’t like is traditional British tea. I don’t like a cuppa.... a teabag, boiling water and a splash of milk. Not my jam. I'm a coffee person. Or at least I WAS a coffee person. Nowadays I'm a coffee and loose leaf tea person!

(Some images stolen from the internet!)

When I was younger my father and I used to drink jasmine tea. My dad went through a phase of really liking to make Chinese cuisine from scratch (he still to this day makes a fabulous home-made sweet-and-sour chicken!), but as part of that he bought some pretty blue bowls and plates and a lovely Chinese teapot. It wasn’t necessarily the best quality and I remember how tiny the little pieces were but I enjoyed the perfume and fragrant nature of it. And the fact that it didn’t have milk in. This is odd considering that I love milk as much as I do and would happily neck a latte, or in fact just drink milk on its own hot or cold. Not in tea, for some reason.

Having said all of the above, lets contradict myself by saying that in my adult life I’ve mainly had tea in Iced bubble milk form (it's powdered right, so not like normal milk?!) and please give me ALL the papaya, melon, rose and taro milk tea in London, thank you! Other than that I've had tea in cocktails and as a flavour in food. Matcha I particularly liked for its grassy flavour. There is a restaurant in Soho called Shack Fuyu which makes a Japanese French toast with matcha softserve ice cream and it brings me a lot of joy. Or at least it used to before Covid shut everything down, but ANYWAY! I tried a matcha latte and it was a bit rich for me, too sweet and a bit sickly but recently when I ordered our coffee from Spiller and Tate (more on that in a later post!), I noticed that they made a ceremonial grade Macha powder. It had a great taste award and I needed to spend a bit more for free postage so I ordered a packet. I figured that the health benefits made it worth trying even if it wasn't my favourite drink, so my partner and I sat down for a Macha tea and it was LUSH. I guess the lack of milk is what made it work for me.... interesting!

This stuff is delicious. It’s a bit of a bugger to make if you want it without lumps, but we don’t really care too much about lumps so I haven’t gone down the route of getting the whisk, the bowl, and all the other bits and pieces to do it properly. The ceremony is in the drinking and chilling out with each other rather than the actual preparation for us. Do it your own way!

This spawned a new ceremony for us during lockdown. We decided that every day we would have half an hour or so just spent together with no electronics, no TV, no music, no phones (sometimes a woodwick candle) and just have a lovely cup of tea. Our own joint mindful moment! It started with matcha but quite quickly I decided I needed to get jasmine tea back in my life. I did a fair bit of investigation to find the right jasmine tea. I didn’t want to get one of the cheaper ones, I wanted something a bit fancy, something that wouldn’t taste bitter or Jasmine "flavoured"!.

The brand that I chose was The Tea Makers of London. I ordered a tin from Amazon and hey presto we had some delicious loose leaf jasmine tea. I didn’t even realise that it was green tea with Jasmine added..... that’s how little I know about tea!

This tea is sensational. Truly it has changed my life. I now love Tea!

Obviously this new routine required a teapot for looseleaf tea and I like transparent stuff (my coffee cups are glass too!), so onto Amazon I went and found this really cute teapot, perfect for two small cups of tea. I also wanted some of the double walled glasses which I have loved for ages. They always look so cute and you know, might as well get something fancy if we’re having a little ceremonial tea.

We have tried a few different teas now, some of which are fruity, some of which are herbal and some of which are just green or black tea. I’m quite sure that some of them will be brilliant for other people but personally I’m not as into herbal teas as green and black. There are a few exceptions though, however.

I’ll tell you about my favourites now!

Cream of the crop, top of the heap, a vision from afar (props to my fellow oldies who know that's a French and Saunders reference!), is jasmine green tea. It really is just so incredibly delicious. It does feel good for you, but it also tastes good, looks good and just generally IS good. The aroma is particularly wonderful. Funnily enough the actual fragrance of Jasmine can be a bit overpowering for me in perfume but in food and drink it's fabulous and I love it! My previous experiences of tea had been that they were sometimes a little bitter, made my mouth feel dry and really dried out my throat. I guess that is to do with the cheapness of some of the tea that I've had before, and also how it has been brewed. I had no idea that green tea was best brewed with water of around 70°. Who knew?! This tea was clear and thirst quenching and fragrant but subtle. There was no dry mouth or dry throat. It was a joy to drink.

I did some more Tea investigation after falling hard for Jasmine. I was hunting for Hibiscus tea and wanted to find a Local-ish tea company that were fair trade and had a wide but affordable range of quality tea. I came across Tea People and I fell in love! I've got lots of their teas now. They’re great for all the classics (now have some Jasmine and hopefully it will match up to the Tea Makers of London!) but they also have flowering tea and some excellent herbal potions! I ordered some for the reasons you’re supposed to drink them, i.e. sleep (to help with sleep.... obviously!) and hibiscus (which is good for lowering blood pressure). I won't list all the teas I've tried from them (so far!) but I'll give you my favourites.

My (new in at number 2!) favourite on the list after Jasmine, is currently Tea People Cherry Black. Black tea with cherry and rose -  this one feels really fancy, it feels like a treat, a bit special! My partner says it tastes like liquid Cherry Bakewells and I have to agree with him. I think the black tea is not quite as good for you as green tea, however it's still beneficial and is delicious to boot. This one is SCRUMPTIOUS! So much so that the man of the house said it felt too tasty to be an everyday tea as surely the ones that are really good for you aren't that delicious! I mean I feel like that about Jasmine, but I guess he thinks of that as more medicinal?! I think I might have to do a bit more investigation into other black teas now.

Hibiscus is not a tea I like hot. It's a bit like drinking hot cranberry juice with no sweetener. I like it as an iced tea! I add sugar and the tea leaves to a big bowl and add boiling water. let it brew for 5 minutes or so and then pour it through a sieve, into a jug that goes into the fridge. It's great!

Most excellent iced tea.

The Sleep tea is a fragrant herbal and lovely tea. It does seem to work for helping you sleep and just generally relaxing. Happily it’s caffeine free (again...... obviously right?!) and it contains Hemp, St John's wort, Passion flower, Hops, Valerian, Rose petals and Rose oil which makes you feel less anxious, therefore helping you nod off. I really like this one because I love the rose flavour. I had some the other afternoon when I was feeling tense and it really did seem to calm me down. I HIGHLY recommend this tea, particularly for anxious folk or stressful times (you know... like a global pandemic!).

We got a sample pack of the Tea People Detox tea in our last order and we were both instant fans of this one! It's green tea based but the apple is subtle and natural and the cinnamon really shines through. This was calming, warming and genuinely tasty so we are certainly going to order a tin of this!

The daily tea has become of very nice ceremony during lockdown. It’s like creating a little oasis of calm in our own home. I can’t tell you how often this has lead to really interesting, funny or deep conversations and occasionally, epic snuggle times (and... errr.... epic naked times!). Sometimes it's just silent enjoyment of sharing a space. We both really value this new tradition, but I've also enjoyed having a tea break alone if my partner is out or busy. Some quiet time to relax and reflect. I just wanted to share in case it inspires someone else to try it alone or with a loved one!

Can't believe I like tea. Covid times have changed me!

Asos with a hint of New Look

Happy Birthday to meeeeee! I decided that even though I wasn't going anywhere, that was no reason not to get dressed up. I knew this dress would be mine. It cost an arm and a leg (even on sale and with a discount code on top!) But I am famously a Rose Gold obsessive and have been for about 20 years! That's right. I loved Rose gold before it was fashionable or easy to buy. Honestly, I used to order big rose gold plated hoop earrings from from a company based in America! Ahhhh Silvershake used to sell the best huge hoop earrings, I was devastated when my massive rose gold ones broke after years of wear. Never found any as big or thick that don't cost a small fortune. I can't fathom why they stopped selling their XL hoops but anyway. That was a lovely lil' trip down memory lane huh?!

What I'm trying to tell you is that the moment I saw this dress I knew it would end up in my wardrobe. It had to be mine. Technically its a rosy blush pink dress with a metallic silver coating, but as you can see, the over all effect is rose gold and its lush. Totally lush! This is the 24 and it's a good fit. Biggest size they do annoyingly. Okay if you wear a bigger size but have a smaller waist than bust and hips - which are both pretty free-size - but the waist isn't stretchy.

I felt very glamorous in this, even though I had an eye infection at the time so couldn't wear eye makeup (always a dark lippy to compensate in such circumstances!)

This is one of those tops that will come in super handy in spring. It's stretchy and soft Jersey. Generous in size. Love the sleeves!

These were in the mens section, but they CALLED to me! The wide fit in my normal size turned out to be bloody perfect!

Normally when I try mens boots from asos they're way too small on the ankle. These are tight but also stretchy so they work. They're also rather hard to get off lol, but they'll be better after a few wears I reckon!

The sole is so bouncy and comfy. Mould to the foot really well. The toe is obviously awesome and the width is great.

Also available in other colours. In fact, if you don't need a wide fit, you can get these in a fabulous pastel green or hot pink. Both of which I was pissed about not being able to get in wide fit!

This is the size 24. Ridiculous. Nice soft and flowing fabric (the kind that shrinks in the wash!) But really. Doesn't work for me! Fyi, I ordered a 20 for comparison but it was too short in the body and a nightmare to get into. It still looked clownish.

Errr yes please! I am digging Asos making stretchy and comfy jumpsuits that I can relax in!

In the sale and super cheap right now. So comfy. Really loved this. Can sit crossed legged and everything! This is the 24 and I wouldn't go smaller due to having to pull it on over my big bum. Not sure the seams are strong enough!

Does draw attention to the old vag but I care not! Oh one thing to mention. Asos keep describing this fabric as textured jersey. That's misleading as it is not a soft and comfy fabric like jersey. I've never felt Jersey like this and I don't think anyone would think this felt like jersey. It's a bit rough. Not so much as to be uncomfortable, but certainly a bit scratchy compared to regular Jersey.

Boohoo wins winter

It's taken me so long to actually write this blog post. 2021 has already been so horrifically stressful that I  have felt incapable of just getting shit done, even when it's stuff I enjoy! But today was a doing day, so I'm getting all my ducks in a line.

I've had 3 posts with pics and no words for quite some time and I've been planning to spread stuff out since I made the decision to get my spending back under control (you will see why!).

I will have less new stuff to review after these. However, I will keep posting and writing about things generally. I might also do some ootd posts and I have bought a few brilliant things recently that I can wax lyrical about (things that have really been making life better!). I hope this doesn't mean that the items aren't available anymore! Let's finally find out.....

This was shorter than I had hopped but it was also much nicer and softer than I had expected too! It's stretchy enough to pull down and tuck in to jeans, but I think it will come into it's own over the top of dresses and jumpsuits.

Fabulous bell sleeves and great on the old norks. Really like this cardi, it's so comfy. Get your normal size in this one!

I would never wear this with baggy jeans FYI, this is just for the snap! Massive warm lovely jumper. Sadly it seems to be sold out in this blue, but it's still available in black (and they have other knitwear in this fabulous colour!)

It's not particularly soft but it is massively warm. I'd size down in this one, I did and it's still BIG!

Has side splits and cute detailing along sleeves.

I tried a few long cardigans and a lot of them were oddly small.

This one was awesome. I really like this cardigan a lot. I've been chucking it on over the top of loads of things!

It is quite soft and thick, great pockets, knee length and big enough to wrap around yourself. Get your normal size!

I just really fancied an oversized cardi like this one! It's not hugely soft but not full on itchy like some knits are.

Get your normal size or one down - it's properly oversized!

You can probably tell from the photo - I fuckin' love this jumper!

First up I'll say that I wouldn't describe this as a jumper! It's a thick jersey top really, but it's bloody fantastic.

Actually a decent length, but I was always gonna tuck it in. The shoulder pads are awesome. I also have it in black and fully intend to buy the other colour available too..... I have worn both versions at least twice each already!

This is more of a lightweight jumper! Dunno what's turtle neck about it? Annoyingly short in the body but perfect for tucking in......

See what I mean?! Soft and super stretchy. Get your normal size!

I just really wanted a slubby slouchy jumper, but I didn't want it to be oddly short, or look old / damaged, or have a bastard dipped hem! This is perfect.

Thick, loose knit and soft, but heavy enough to fall well. Wish they had it in block colours!

Asos curve review 2021 #1

 New year, same me.

I've had many versions of this jumpsuit in my wish list for aaaggggeeeesss. My favorite was the greenone with black squiggles, but as this one was in the sale and I knew I'd just be wearing it round the house, I just accepted this print. It's super comfy and lovely. Stretch jersey. I got the size 24 because 26 in jersey is nearly always too big for me, but this jumpsuit requires you to pull it over your arse through the neck, so I'd say that it's wisest to get the right size for your bottom half rather than your top. It's got the drawstring waist and batwing sleeves so it won't look accidentally oversized ;)

I have been looking for an autumnal beige coat for quite some time. I wanted to replace an old asos favourite of mine which was falling to bits, but everything seemed to be either very thick or very thin. This one was exactly right and has now officially replaced the old one!

After reading the reviews about how oversized this is, I sized down to a 22. It's perfect. The sleeves are a bit long but I will fold them up so it's no big deal.

I like how long it is but obviously if you are average height or shorter, this will be a maxi length coat on you. It's worth a punt thought as it's soft, comfy, warm but not hot and has a lovely collar that can be folded up.

I'm a bit obsessed with hairbands at the moment. I tried loads and just kept this one. I know it's cutsie but I care not! Plus it's grey and matches my salt and peppery roots!

This coat is brilliant. If I'd have been looking for a thicker winter coat then this would have been a keeper! It's size 24 and is comfy and original. I really liked the shape and detailing. It is a bit oversized as I'd normally need a 26 in this sort of coat.

It's a more mushroomy colour IRL than it looks on the website, but otherwise it's as you would expect.

This is another coat that was reviewed as being oversized, so I tried the 24. It's actually not that big by Asos standards, but the body is a bit generous. The arms are certainly not oversized though! They were very tight.

If you don't have huge arms like me then this might be a good option, as it's made a of lovely soft thick fabric that has a bit of stretch. Lovely colour and shape too.

Well.... I was warned! I went for the 26 and it's too small on top! Flexible on the waist as it does up with ties on the inside and out, but yeah, small and not stretchy. Also, it's a super muted washed out gold. nowt wrong with that of course, but the photo's on the website are very misleading in that respect! It's lined and if you can find the right size it's actually a lovely dress with a flattering silhouette.

Size 24. I'm super bored of sloping shoulders with seams that are halfway down my arms and dresses that are much bigger on top than on the bottom. That's all I'm gonna say about this one!

I assumed that this would be non-stretch so I ordered the 26. it was way too loose. I'd actually get this in a 22 if I was to re-order it. I wasn't sure if I liked it enough to actually do that though. Maybe I'd love it if it were fitted? It can live in my wishlist for a while!

I liked this a lot, but let's face it - it's a work dress and after almost a year of pandemic furlough and working from home, I just don't need more smart attire! I do look at it and think.... maybe you do need this though? It's soooooo pretty!

I got the 26 and it was a bit generous on top, but not so generous on the hips, so probably best to put up with a looser top if you're big on the bottom like me! It's firm but silky and stretchy. Feels like stretch suit fabric if that makes sense?! Looking at myself in the pics makes me want to re-order it, but I'm resisting because I've gone a bit made in the sales already (you'll see!)

This is the size 24 and it's very generous. I often find this to be the case with this style of stretch dress. I'd probably try the 22 for comfort but the 20 might actually be the best fit. I'm honestly not sure how the model managed to get it off both shoulders as it's certainly designed to just fall off one shoulder!

It's a thin scuba style fabric. Very soft and comfy, super stretchy (as you can see!). I like this though. Nothing better than a dress that is both sexy AND comfy. Of course I don't have anywhere to go at the moment so.... maybe I'll get it in a smaller size in the future?!

Square necks are my jam at the moment, so I was OBVIOUSLY gonna get this jumpsuit wasn't I?!

I couldn't work out what the fabric would be like, so went for the 26 (pictured). Too big! it's sort of rough, textured and stretchy fabric. I could easily have fit the 22 as the 24 I got instead can be pulled on and off without unbuttoning it, but as I'm spending so much time at home I wanted a relaxed fit, so the 24 is ideal.

I love this though. I can literally jump around in it! I can sit crossed legged and bed over and it moves with me. also a good length in the body, so no camel toes to worry about!
