Plus size cottagecore

Those of you who have been following my blog for a while will know that sometimes I like to be a bit whimsical. I often like clothes that remind me of flower fairies or sometimes princesses (but maybe not too Princessy!). I hadn’t heard of the term cottagecore until recently but many of my clothes fit quite nicely into the aesthetic. I had a search for plus size cottagecore and couldn’t really find any much about it. Or at least nothing that would help me shop! I figured I would put something up because I have a bit of a lady boner for it at the moment.

(It is very dangerous that I've discovered Shein! This is a 5XL / UK 26 but it's generous and has a bit of stretch and elasticated waist / tie bust, so it would easily fit bigger! Comes in mustard yellow and nude pink too! So much cottagecore on Shein!)

There are a number of reasons why I think cottagecore is such a good look for plus size women. For one it’s hyper feminine and I think us fat birds are so often overlooked when it comes to pulling off super girly looks. So many of the cuts are hella fitted and flattering or hella loose fitting, so you can go full smock if you don’t feel comfortable in form sitting clothes, or you can nip everything in at the waist and get your norks out! Although many of the dresses are short, a ton of them are midi and maxi, so no worries about chub rub shorts showing out of the bottom. Oh and the sleeves! Firstly most of the dresses have sleeves which is great for those who are paranoid about their bingo wings. Additionally the sleeves tend to be big and puffy or elasticated or loose, which is heaven for me and my massive upper arms! It’s honestly my favourite trend in years, hence the whole post dedicated to it!

What initially drew my attention to this new fad was Selkie, the spectacular dreamlike, inclusive clothing shop that creates dresses you'd normally only see in movies! Probably a sexy, historical film set in Versailles and full of innocence being lost! There would be frolicking ladies picking flowers, pulling apples from trees and just generally floating around outside spaces looking like a daydream. I decided to buy a Selkie (after seeing the above shot of Tess Holliday!) because I am planning an event and I wanted something unusual and magical. I’m not going to put it on the blog because it’s a secret at the moment but I’ve got a 5XL and it’s a glorious fit…. I’d say it’s a good size 26 in UK sizing. But buying that dress reminded me of how much I love what I always called flower fairy dresses and nowadays people would call fairytale or cottagecore, also sometimes farmcore, all of which basically means floaty, floral - maybe gingham  - and super feminine clothes with a bit of a nod to vintage historical looks.

There are a few pictures on this blog of me wearing dresses where I sort of look like I’m in fancy dress and I’m not scared of people looking at me. It’s funny when I look at my wardrobe how many things I have that fit quite nicely into this particular style of dress. I have quite a few floaty, girly, over the top dresses, many of which I just wear whenever I fancy and not for special occasions. Old dresses aren’t  going to be much help to my readers because you can’t get to them anymore, so I thought I would Investigate the plus size retailers to see what they are offering and then try an absolute shit load of it on! I'll post that up when I've had time to collate everything. I have gone a bit bananas to be honest and I’m not allowed to keep too much of it, but I will certainly keep some!

In terms of stuff I already have that you can still get (or very similar items anyway!) I have to give Boohoo a real shout out. They have porcelains prints, big puffy sleeves, square necks and so many cottage core dresses at the moment! I loved this pink one so much that I also got the blue version. The pink is 24 and the blue (now sold out!) is a 22. They're both really generous so a size 28 could easily wear a 24 without it looking tight! this is so cute and can be worn with the sleeves off the shoulders too! I LOVE this dress. The pink one is still in stock and is only £14!

I got this delicious dress I got from ASOS a while back (size 26 but 24 would have been fine too!). Lots of people complained about this dress because it’s very low-cut and as you can see it doesn’t really leave much to the imagination in the old boob area! You will need a very good plunge bra or small boobs. I really wouldn’t advise to wear a top underneath this I think it really would ruin the look! So be brave or maybe try one of the other similar dresses I've found!

There was a white version of this as well but it’s sold out otherwise I would’ve had it too, hundred percent! I feel like absolute sex bomb and princess in this at the same time. It's so comfy, it’s so pretty, it’s so flattering, I absolutely love it with a passion. It’s only available in a couple of sizes now but interestingly both Asos and River Island have dresses that are very similar here and here that are both and are both totally awesome! It’s hard because I keep seeing them And wanting them but genuinely they are pretty much the same dress in a slightly different style so I don’t need them now. They do look like they’re not quite as low-cut though so for those of you who find this one a little bit too booby they might be perfect! If you are more pear shaped then the Shein version here would be good as reviews say the bust is a bit small.... it comes in lots of colours too!

I'll be back with some new frocks and some sent back frocks in the cottagecore family very soon! I know winter is coming but I'm going to be frolicking indoors, in floaty dresses, for as long as my boiler is working!

Boohoo Plus

Boohoo had a few really awesome things in the plus range, so I had to make a little order and try things out!

This is a crinkle fabric and I liked it. I didn’t keep it, but I liked it! Size 26.

It has an elasticated waist  and nips in under the bust really nicely. There are two flaps at the front that you can position in a few ways. The shoulders can be worn Bardot style as well as over the shoulder.

The low side is a bit of a problem for me, just because my bras are pretty big so you’d always see them.

Over all though, it’s a lovely dress and I recommend it!

It’s obvious that I’m into this one right?

It’s a sort of textured shell fabric with a bit of stretch. Nice and soft. Not horrifically static and nice and thin, so perfect for warm weather. This is the 26. The 24 might have been a better fit but it had sold out. I figured that I would want a bit of space anyway!

So it has a nice tie on the bust which allows you to control how loose or tight the top is.

Elasticated waist and tie sleeves. Super comfy. The only downside was how wide the shoulders were, so i did a bit of sewing….

…. Very basic sewing!

It makes it a bit more fiddly too get in and out of because it makes the opening to the jumpsuit smaller, but it looks much better now as the proportions look a bit more equal!

I was sooooo excited when I saw this!

Oh my god I love it! This is the 28 but the 26 was actually a great fit. I decided to keep this because I knew I’d want to close the bust up a bit and l wanted extra room.

The legs are so gloriously wide and fabulous!

So then, this jumpsuit took some work to adjust. It was clearly made for a giant as the legs were insanely long! I think I’ve taken them up at least 3 inches and they’re still hitting the floor (deliberate so I can wear heels with them!). Bearing in mind that I’m a bit under 5’8” I’d say that the legs will need hemming for 99% of people who buy it.

The fabric is medium weight and smooth, has some stretch but is shell like without the texture.

I can’t wait to wear this one. It feels too fancy for every day wear, but I really look forward to the right occasion.

Another thin stretch shell fabric.

Not designed to be worn with a bra sadly.

It’s a bit of a confusing dress really because it’s midi, has sleeves and is quite structured and tailored so it looks smart. Then it has this insane low neckline that is basically gonna let your norks hang (or pop out if you’re lucky enough to have firm or perky boobs!) out so it looks like a sex dress!.

There’s no way to sew it up and I hate wearing vests under a dress…. Both in terms of comfort and how it looks. I really hate how it looks!

This is a 26 and I really loved the print, colour and style so I tried my bra with the shallowest cups that I own. Like just covered the nips sort of bra, and it was still hard to hide the cups.

Plus it still looks like a sex dress if you can see the underwires! I sent it back, but I was gutted about it!

This 26 was actually a bit too big for me. Nice thick and stretchy satin. Like the colour!

The length just doesn’t suit me. If this came in a midi version I’d have been straight online ordering it in a 24!

Cute vests are always handy for work. With smart trousers they can still look very chic.

It’s non stretch and has adjustable straps. Size 26. Decent length!

I really like this!

Obviously I had to have these didn’t I?

Neon red / pink!

And these were also too cute to pass up. All in all this was a pretty satisfying haul. Boohoo are inconsistent but sometimes they really smash it!

Boohoo wins winter

It's taken me so long to actually write this blog post. 2021 has already been so horrifically stressful that I  have felt incapable of just getting shit done, even when it's stuff I enjoy! But today was a doing day, so I'm getting all my ducks in a line.

I've had 3 posts with pics and no words for quite some time and I've been planning to spread stuff out since I made the decision to get my spending back under control (you will see why!).

I will have less new stuff to review after these. However, I will keep posting and writing about things generally. I might also do some ootd posts and I have bought a few brilliant things recently that I can wax lyrical about (things that have really been making life better!). I hope this doesn't mean that the items aren't available anymore! Let's finally find out.....

This was shorter than I had hopped but it was also much nicer and softer than I had expected too! It's stretchy enough to pull down and tuck in to jeans, but I think it will come into it's own over the top of dresses and jumpsuits.

Fabulous bell sleeves and great on the old norks. Really like this cardi, it's so comfy. Get your normal size in this one!

I would never wear this with baggy jeans FYI, this is just for the snap! Massive warm lovely jumper. Sadly it seems to be sold out in this blue, but it's still available in black (and they have other knitwear in this fabulous colour!)

It's not particularly soft but it is massively warm. I'd size down in this one, I did and it's still BIG!

Has side splits and cute detailing along sleeves.

I tried a few long cardigans and a lot of them were oddly small.

This one was awesome. I really like this cardigan a lot. I've been chucking it on over the top of loads of things!

It is quite soft and thick, great pockets, knee length and big enough to wrap around yourself. Get your normal size!

I just really fancied an oversized cardi like this one! It's not hugely soft but not full on itchy like some knits are.

Get your normal size or one down - it's properly oversized!

You can probably tell from the photo - I fuckin' love this jumper!

First up I'll say that I wouldn't describe this as a jumper! It's a thick jersey top really, but it's bloody fantastic.

Actually a decent length, but I was always gonna tuck it in. The shoulder pads are awesome. I also have it in black and fully intend to buy the other colour available too..... I have worn both versions at least twice each already!

This is more of a lightweight jumper! Dunno what's turtle neck about it? Annoyingly short in the body but perfect for tucking in......

See what I mean?! Soft and super stretchy. Get your normal size!

I just really wanted a slubby slouchy jumper, but I didn't want it to be oddly short, or look old / damaged, or have a bastard dipped hem! This is perfect.

Thick, loose knit and soft, but heavy enough to fall well. Wish they had it in block colours!
